Welcome to Day 2 of the Sew Along! Need to catch up?
Finding fabrics you like can sometimes be tricky so today we’re going to discuss a few possibilities for embellishing. It’s always easiest to embellish before you sew. For Will’s shirt I added a little car out of contrast fabric to one corner and he LOVES it (thanks to Rachel in the wonderful fb group for the inspiration!)
When I applique with knit I like to use a double sided fusible interfacing (wonder-under, steam a seam, etc.) to hold my design in place and then I topstitch around it. Since knits don’t fray you don’t need to zig-zag around all the edges. Some other fun ideas include machine emboriedery, freezer paper stencils, fabric markers, etc. I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!
Now that our fabric is ready to go we’re going to prepare the placket by adding the interfacing and pressing
One thing I find super helpful is to overlap my pressed placket pieces (as if it were snapped) and make the front is the same size as the back. If not you need to measure a bit more carefully and press again 🙂 Remember you don’t need to sew the placket down quite yet
Now sew up your shoulder seams and you’re ready for tomorrow!
