Warm Weather Back to School Staples

Hi!  It’s Kasey from Ruby Rue Creations!  I’m excited to share the Peekaboo patterns we use to make the back-to-school transition stress free!

We live in a very warm climate, so our back-to-school wardrobes still include some of our favorite Summer-y Peekaboo patterns!  Let’s start with my son.  He’s going to first grade and is very active.  He’s particular about the fabrics that touch his skin; he loves soft, comfy fabric.  My go-to shorts for him are the Coastal Craze Baggies and Hang Time Shorts.

I’ve lost count of how many I’ve made for him over the last few years!  My favorite part about the Coastal Craze Baggies is that I can make them from knits or wovens and the fit is still great!!  I love this madras plaid from the Peekaboo Fabric Shop; it “goes” with everything and makes early morning dressing easier!  I usually leave the pockets off of the Hang Time (at his request) which makes these also a super fast sew!  He tells me his favorites are made with French Terry Cotton Lycra!

For tops, we love the Tide Pool Tank and the Grand Slam.  Both are super fast and can easily be customized with freezer paper stenciling, vinyl, embroidery or used with custom fabric panels.  I can keep up with his ever-changing interests since these are so fast to sew!  His build is very slender, so the Tide Pool Tank is a great fit for him.  We also use the Tide Pool for layering underneath long sleeve shirts once it gets cooler…BONUS!  The Grand Slam features a slim or athletic fit, which allows me to adjust as he grows!  (Super Bonus…the pattern also includes a dress which my daughter uses for nightgowns!)

My daughter is my fashionista and is also very particular about her clothes!  She changes her mind about styles and outfits about a dozen times a day, so making something quick is a must!

The Little Miss Sunshine is my staple top for her.  She loves asking for different designs on front!  My favorite part about this top, besides it being a ridiculously fast sew, is that if I make this in a printed knit, it can be worn frontwards or backwards!  Again, easy early morning dressing!!  I also like how nicely this pairs with so many of the Peekaboo bottoms (skirts, shorts, leggings, pants, etc.).  PLUS, the pattern includes a paneled circle skirt for a dress!

The Spunky Girl Skater Skirt is probably her favorite skirt.  It’s so easy that with a little supervision, she made her own last year!  I make this for her out of knits and wovens and love pairing it with the Little Miss Sunshine!  I sometimes use the shorts from the Lollipop Leggings or Skip Along Skort and sew them in when sewing on the waistband, so no one sees her undies as she’s spinning or climbing!

She recently discovered jean shorts and is pretty obsessed with them.  For her pineapple bottoms, I used the Skinny Jeans pattern and made them into shorts!  I just measured against her favorite jean shorts and added hem allowance.  Even though this took slightly longer to make because of the topstitching, it is so worth it.  The topstitching steps create such a professional finish!  And I can still sew up a pair or two in a few hours.

What are your favorite back-to-school staples?  Sew up a Peekaboo Pattern this week and show us on the Peekaboo Pattern Shop Facebook page or on Instagram.  Use the hashtags #backtoschoolpab AND #peekaboopatternshop when posting.  10 winners will be chosen and can each choose one Peekaboo Pattern!  Amy will choose on Monday, August 7th, so get those patterns sewn!  Post as many as you make this week for bonus entries!  Good luck and happy sewing!
